The link of “The Lotus Eater” is here : The Lotus Eater
There are a few short stories I like to re-read and the Lotus Eater is one of them. A few years ago I found it mentioned in a book and decided to search for it since the writer wrote about it fondly. I love the story even though it was written in the 1930s. It reminds me of my childhood in Guam. I understand why many people fall in love with island living. The simplicity, the weather, and just a lifestyle of not being rushed will cause almost anybody to want to retire in an island. Though the story mentions all this, I think the message of assuming how your retirement life will begin and end is something not to be taken lightly.
It’s amazing to me how anyone in my generation (I’m a millennial) will know how much, where, and when to retire. When I see people wanting to retire in their 40s, or 50s I wonder if they account for how long will they really be living and if they planned for health care. So often have I heard from seniors how their retirement portfolio was ruined because of the recession, and bad health.
Anyways, enjoy the short story. It’s a bit long for me to copy & paste so hopefully the link works fine.
